February 2024: Heavy Snowfall in Chitral

Chitral received heavy snowfall in late February and early March in 2024. From 29 February to 3 March, Chitral Town recorded 27 inches of snow while Drosh recorded 15 inches of snow. 55-60 inches of snow was recorded at Lawari Top and 16 and 36 inches of snowfall was recorded in Booni and Garamchashma respectively.

Hundreds of commuters were stranded at Lawari before the road was closed and passengers rescued. Schools were officially closed till 9th March in both Upper and Lower Chitral. Roads were blocked across both districts while heavy power shortage was also observed with Mobile Phone networks closed.

People expressed their concerns on the extreme weather conditions and disturbed climate pattern due to the Climate Change.
