July 2024: Floods in Chitral Destroy Hundreds of Houses & Infrastructure

Chitral was hit by devastating floods in late July 2024, which caused massive damage to private properties and washed away infrastructures. On 30th July 2024, several villages in Upper & Lower Chitral were hit by flash floods after heavy rainfall. Golen valley & Mori in Lower District while Reshun, Dizg, Khruzg & Brep in Upper Chitral saw flash floods. 16 houses in Golen, 6 in Mori, 4 in Reshun and 25 in villages of Yarkhun i.e, Dizg, Khruzg and Brep were destroyed.
On 31th July morning, the second spell of floods hit a remote village namely Sorech in Rech valley of Torkhow Upper Chitral.wiping out 45 houses completely while killing two locals including a woman. Dozens of other houses were partially damaged in the calamity. 3 vehicles were buried under the debris while the number of cattles killed were not ascertained. The flood completely devastated more than 80% of the village. Relief & rescue operations were immediately launched by the district administration and Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH).
Another massive flood hit Booni on 3rd of August followed by another flood in Sheeshi Koh area of Lower Chitral. The flood in Booni washed away jeepable bridges on the Booni Stream affectively disconnecting the two parts of the town.
