The book is an account of a British expedition led by Col James Graves Kelly marching over the mighty Shandur pass from Gilgit to free British Army men besieged in the Chitral fort in 1895. The author, W. G. L. Beynon, was the Staff Officer to the Colonel and a part of the expedition.
