This paper is the first dedicated attempt to understand slavery and the slave trade in 19th-century Chitral, positioning it as a key hub in Central Asia’s trans-regional slave networks. It shows how slavery was embedded in society and later institutionalized by the state for revenue. It also examines abolition pressures from British, Afghan, and Russian policies, alongside details of enslavement practices, pricing, and religious targeting.
