Badakhshan is a historical region spanning the present-day territories of northeastern Afghanistan and eastern Tajikistan, as well as bordering Chitral in Pakistan and northwestern China. The region had an intense cultural, trade and diplomatic exchanges with Chitral from the earliest known history.
