1. “When Sheikh (Abdullah) Sahib came to power in 1975, I brought up the subject and he told me to draft a letter seeking the return of the Gilgit manuscripts. “The letter was sent to Madam Indira Gandhi, but nothing happened after that,” Taing said in IANS interview ↩︎

  2. Buddha says in the Samādhirāja Sūtra of the Ms. that there would be in future monks, who, though donning on yellow robes, would abuse the privileges of a monk, adhere to the notion of the existence of self, and avoid out of fear listening to the doctrine of sunyata, but still they would be respected by the people. Candraprabha (disciple) was warned not to place faith in them. see Dutt, N. (1941). Gilgit manuscripts (Vol. II). 4. The name of this king reappears in the Hatun inscriptions in Punial. It was written by one of his military commanders, Makarasiṁha, from the Kāñchudī tribe (Kunjud or Hunza), who declares himself as the deputy of the Patola Shahi king in the city of Giligittā. This indicates that Gilgit itself was not the capital of the central Patola Shahi rulers; rather, a seat of a deputy governor. ibid ↩︎

  6. Shastri found the name Shāhānushāhi Paṭōlashāhi śrī-Nava-Surēndrādityanandidēva in the manuscript he found in 1938. His queen was Anaṅgadēvī. The king’s name reappeared in the Hatun inscription. In the 1931 manuscripts, names of two kings were found; Śrīdēva Shāhi Surēndra Vikramāditya Nanda with queen Śamidēvī-Trailōkadēvī-bhaṭṭārikā and Vihali. Chakravarti found another name, Paṭōladēva Shāhi Vajrādityanandi. Chakravarti, p.229
“The fourth ruler, mentioned at the pedestal of a bronze statue (location of where it was found has not been determined), is Maharaja- dhiraja Paramisvara Patola Shahi Sri Arya Nandi Vikrarnaditya Nandi Deva. This is dated in the year 90 of an unspecified era. A fifth ruler is known from Hodur inscription, whose name is Sri Palola Shahi Surendraditya Nandi (Dani does not make it clear how it differs from the Shastri’s one)…. Another inscription at Danyor (not yet published) which is Early History dated in the year 6, gives the name of Paramesvara Sri Jayamangala Vikramaditya Nandi deva, Mahahhattaraka. The purpose of the inscription appears to be some conquest in the upper Indus valley. The name of the last ruler is obtained from the Sacred Rock of Hunza, where he is called Deva Sri Chandra Vikramaditya. Thus, we get the names of seven (Patola Shahi) rulers from the manuscripts and inscriptions.” Dani. P.147. There are other Shahi names from Chilas too.
